Anime review: B-Project vs. Tsukiuta

I was actually going to post something else today, but decided to switch it out last minute because I have a surprising amount of thoughts on male idol anime. There’s two almost interchangeable shows airing this season, plus I recently got into kpop, so I thought this might be a good time to try my hand at a legit review (even if it’s based on only two episodes each).

tsukiuta vs bpro.png

I feel like it’s inevitable that Tsukiuta and B-Project are going to be compared to each other because they have the same concept and are airing during the same season. Slightly unfair to both shows, but what can you do?

bproject 2.jpgFirst up, B-project! The plot is fairly standard- the female main character somehow becomes a staff member/close to the idols and they have to work together. There’s also some industry drama going on, and there’s pretty much all the standard character archetypes for the idols. I mean, there’s three different groups within the larger B-Project group for a total of ten guys, so all the common character types are covered. The first episode is mostly an introduction to the characters and setting up the story. Main female (I already forgot her name, to be honest) goes off with the two-member group for their recording session.

bpro 1

Seriously, why were you hired??? Why did you accept the job offer????

Despite having zero experience doing any part of her supposed job as A&R, she makes a suggestion that saves the day (or at least their song). In the second episode, she deals with an uncooperative group member (of another group this time) on a photoshoot and establishes closer relationships with new guys. Off the top of my head, that’s literally all I remember from watching these two episodes.

bpro 3

I feel you, girl. I can’t either.

I actually intend on dropping this show. I wasn’t very interested in the first episode, and I could barely focus on the second one. (Of course, that might also have something to do the day that the show airs.) It’s just so… boring. I haven’t watched all the male idol anime, but I have watched a few (because of voice actors I like), plus I’ve watched quite a bit of other reverse harem anime that doesn’t feature idols. This shows feels like pretty much every other reverse harem show out there. Like an UtaPri knock-off, if you will. I mean, yeah, the main girl not knowing about her job presents the perfect opportunity to introduce it to the viewers, most of whom probably don’t know what A&R is (it’s Artists & Repertoire, which is a department responsible for scouting and artist development).

I’m not knowledgeable about the music

bpro 4

Look at the size of this place!

industry in Japan, but based on the first two episodes, it seems she’s also supposed to be a manager and a PA as well? I can’t believe that these guys don’t have a small army of staff trailing them, though that could be explained by how they’re not that popular. But damn, if their company can afford such nice apartments for the artists, at least get them a more experienced manager too.

bpro 2

I could do without the sparkles though

One plus point that I like about this anime is
the whole “inside the industry” sort of thing. You get to see them recording over and over
again. All the work that gets put into releasing a song is something that most people (including me) tend to not think about too much. But the first episode shows the boys recording their parts and harmonies over and over again to get it perfect.

There’s also a semblance of a plot that’s pretty believable- they’re not that popular, so they get cut from shows and only get short features in magazines. It’s a plot I feel like has been done before (duh), but I do appreciate the effort. The problem I have is that I’m just not all that interested. There’s a k-pop idol group who I like, and they are a new group, so the fans don’t really get to see them on a lot of shows yet because their fanbase isn’t that big. So I get that in real life already. I don’t need or want to be worrying about this fictional idol group who I’m much less invested in.

In summary, B-Project just doesn’t catch or hold my attention. While I like the animation, the voice actors, and the inside peek into the music industry, these just aren’t appealing enough that I’d watch any more of the show. I’ve gotten tired of reverse harem anime, plus I don’t have the patience to sit through watching idols’ personal conflicts.

tsukiuta 2.jpegNow on to Tsukiuta! The biggest difference from B-Project is that Tsukiuta is not a reverse harem (yet). The focus is on the two idols groups: Six Gravity and Procella-something, each with six members. (Think EXO at their debut.) It looks like each episode is going to be featuring one individual member every time. The first episode centered around Kakeru and his interactions with this kid who was at an event in place of his older sister. The second episode was with someone whose name I already forgot, despite watching the episode just half an hour ago, but he runs track as well as being an idol.

One thing that I like about Tsukiuta

tsuki 3

Ahh, fangirl delusions

over B-Project is that it’s not a reverse harem anime. Instead, the episodes seem to be one-off stories about a member and what they’re like. The second episode was pretty standard idol life vs. real life sort of thing, but it wasn’t too terrible. I also like the character designs over B-Project, and the plot (if it can even be called that) involves very minimal conflict, and that was the tipping point that ultimately led me to favor Tsukiuta. The first episode was super light-hearted, and the second was still pretty chill. It’s generally just a chill show, which doesn’t appeal to a lot of people, but after seeing the real life drama involved with k-pop, I like the chill a lot more. Plus, there’s more funny tidbits scattered in there that those familiar with idol fangirls can appreciate. Like how all of the boys already come pre-shipped and assigned family roles. Fangirls do that a lot, and most idols tend to indulge them in making pairings or little families out of their group, so I thought that was really funny.
tsuki 6tsuki 7

The most unbelievable aspect of Tsukiuta is probably the complete lack of staff around these guys. I get that they’re not huge idols or anything (nowhere near the scale of EXO at least), but there was a manager shown like once for two seconds, and then nothing. No assistants, stylists, or anything. They even go to their schedules by taxi and they run around like normal people. I’m so confused. At least B-Project had that girl who is supposed to be their staff. I also don’t like the 3D animation they used for the performances. I generally don’t like 3D animation in general (though Ajin has done a lot to warm me up to it), so that’s just personal taste.

In summary, Tsukiuta is just more low-key and that’s closer to my personal tastes in idol anime right now. Plus, I appreciate the lack of romance. Now, if only they could make an anime for the girl versions too…

For both shows, I’m not a huge fan of their songs (when will idols sing about things other than romantic love…) Otherwise, I’m still holding final judgment until further on into the season, though I’ll be depending on episode summaries for B-Project since I don’t want to watch all of it. I’ve already planned an update on what summer anime I’m watching in a couple of weeks when I settle more on what shows I want to keep up with.

Leave a comment below! What shows are you watching this season? If you’ve checked out B-Project or Tsukiuta, what are your thoughts?

  1. I’m more into Tsukiuta like you. And yes I thought that they really lack staffs as well! xDD That’s what makes me love them tho. Such hardworking multi-tasking individuals xDD Even in their drama CDs, they are the one who manage their own merchandise. If I remember right… They even design their own character t-shirt once so they invite the tsukiuta girls to ask some info cuz their target buyers are girls. I think they are not popular too. Its like it just the start of their popularity? What I love about Tsukiuta is the human aspect of the characters. That like a normal person they love to have fun and sometimes having a hard time with their life. It seems they are more close to me compare to B project. They manage to pull in an outsider like me using a child who’s not interested with them in episode 1. That idols is not only about singing and dancing. Its about their charms as individuals. If you don’t like love song, I think they also sing about other topics. Like Arata x Aoi duet “Rainy Day” and You x Yoru duet “Awai Hana”. The people who composed their songs are Well-known Vocaloid Music Producers so its pretty decent. As for 3D choreography, I think its better and cool compare to Utapri’s and Love live’s 3D.

As for B-project, I don’t like that its only focus inside of their own world. I mean their business as idols. There’s no even fans involved and it feels like they see their job as work. They don’t see it as something fun or passionate about. So how can they expect an outsider like me will love them? The heroine also feels empty. Why in world she enter in that business anyway? And what’s with guys feeling bad that they’re not popular? To be honest, I’m much more interested to the Gandhara music director character development compare to the idols in the show. Plus the character design is close to Utapri! I mean if they want their own identity as idols franchise, they should show what’s different about them compare to other idols shows. Not something similar.

Okay that’s it. xDD I decided to comment cuz it feels like you’re open-minded person lol.

    • Wow, thanks for such a long comment! Like I said, I’m not very familiar with the Japanese idol industry (just the korean one lol), so maybe the lack of staff is normal there?? But yeah, I definitely thought that tsukiuta had the better first episode (and better second episode too). I haven’t listened to the drama CDs or anything else in the franchise, but I might check it out soon! Especially since I only recently found out there were female counterparts, so I’m really excited about them, haha. I’ll check out some of their other songs too- I’m a fan of several of the voice actors (especially hosoya yoshimasa- such a nice singing voice!) 3D animation in general is not really my thing, but that’s just personal aesthetic preferences.

The thing about B-project that most put me off was actually the whole UtaPri resemblance. Like I couldn’t see anything really original about it? But I’m actually pretty interested in the whole seeing the idols’ world thing from a business perspective, because that’s kind of what it is. Idols need to make money too, lol. But yeah, the heroine pisses me off because she’s supposed to be a working adult, but she just sort of hangs around. She just randomly got this job that she doesn’t even understand and isn’t all that qualified for, which really frustrates me. Like at least make her something like that girl in Sekkou Boys, who actually wanted a job in the industry lol

Again, thanks for sharing, and such a long comment too! Are you watching any other shows this season? Feel free to talk to me anytime! (My other social media stuff is on my about page, if you want to connect there too uwu)

      • Neither am I! xDD It just that some male voice actors in the cast is my weak point and the character looks cute so I don’t really mind male idol anime like this. But even though I’m open-minded, Of course, I’ll have to look up the heart of the story to identify them. You see, The Tsukiuta series is just a part of Tsukino Production but the franchise is pretty big so please take your time. (Tsukino Pro specialized in producing 2D music artists. I hope you’ll check out their other talents like Growth.)

Yes its like a ripped off. I’m not saying this because I’m a fan of Utapri. But I really think they should focus on making their own trademark. And I do appreciate the technical things about the idol industry but the way they’re doing things is pretty bad in my perspective. Yes, I know that they need money. If that’s the case then they should talk it out or do something productive? The heroine should also has something to make her shine as a character. Maybe her passion in the industry? Not just because she wants to help them. To be honest I think the heroine in Utapri is better than her. Plus the fanservice is not making me happy. Its worse than Utapri’s fanservice.

Since I’m an open-minded person, I watch a lot of stuff with different genres xDD So here’s my list.

DAYS – Soccer anime about the friendship between a beginner and a genius soccer player. This sports anime lacks the technical parts of the sports and mostly focus on the story of the main characters. So If you like the informative sports anime like Haikyuu or Diamond no Ace, This is not for you.

91 Days – About a guy who seek revenge cuz a certain Mafia murdered his whole family. Its pretty seinen and mature. The first episode feels like a real movie lol.

Arslan Senki: Fujin Ranbu – Cuz I love the season 1. About a prince and his journey to be a king. Historical anime is one of my weakness so I love it! Hosoya has a role too!

Fukigen no Mononokean – Reminds of Xxxholic or Mushishi. About a guy who handles ayakashi stuffs.

Fudanshi no Koukousei – short anime about Fudanshi (guy who loves BL) everyday life. I’m watching it for fun since its originally a comedy 4 panel manga anyway.

Amaama to Inazuma – A slice of life anime about a father and his daughter. I would like to see how he can raise his daughter on his own and when will his daughter accept that her mother is already dead.

Cheer Danshi – About university students who decided to make a male cheering club to inspire people. The idea is pretty fresh that’s why I can’t help but try it.

      • Oh yeah, the heroine in B-Pro is sort of flat… She at least has a better character design than the girl in UtaPri though (those eyes still scare me tbh haha)
I’m watching 91 Days and Cheer Danshi as well! 91 Days has a couple of voice actors I like, plus I like the setting and overall tone of it. it definitely feels like more of a serious anime than anything else this season. Cheer Danshi is one I’ve been looking forward too. I love sports anime in general, and Cheer Danshi is one that is feeling more realistic than anything else. Not sure about Days, since I started reading the manga but it just didn’t hold my attention too much (maybe I’ve been desensitized to the more traditional team sports in sports manga and anime? idk) I might check it out after it ends, so I can watch it all in one go. I don’t know how I overlooked Fukigen no Mononokean when I went over this season’s shows, but I just looked it up and it sounds pretty good, so I’ll check that out! Amaama to Inazuma was a show I was a little wary about (the high school girl made me suspicious about where the plot would go) but I’ve heard so many good things about it that I might pick it up later. I was going to check out Fudanshi no Koukousei too, but I’ve been trying to stay away from shorts because they always leave me really unsatisfied, so yeah. Also wary about it considering how fujoshi and fudanshi related comedy is usually really cringey in anime. (I have a lot of feelings about BL and its reception in general, like I wrote a paper about it for class once, so I’ll spare you the rant, haha. tl;dr I like BL too but I generally hate the fandom) And I didn’t watch the first season of Arslan Senki, but it’s a show I’ve been sort of putting on the back burner. Like i might watch it maybe? But I usually watch anime for the visual appeal first, and Arslan Senki doesn’t really do it for me. Which are your favorites? I think Cheer Danshi has a good shot of ending up as my favorite of the season, but 91 Days and Binan Koukou season 2 are contenders as well. Plus shokugeki no soma season 2 is hopeful, if only for the delicious food *p*

  2. My favorite? I think its gonna be Tsukiuta and Arslan Senki since I’ve been waiting for those two ever since they announce the anime adaption. Tsukiuta announced their adaption in year 2014 so I’m really glad that its already out finally! As for Arslan, Its Historical and about Struggle for the throne. Its obviously my weakpoint. Plus the characters and their development are endearing. And I don’t really care if the animation is not that good, as long as the story and characterization is good.

I ended up trying 91 days to fill up the hole in my heart Joker game made last season. You see, Joker game is my favorite anime last season so it feels like I need a seinen serious anime like that. Cheer danshi also has good first episodes but I’m not really thrilled because of the fact that everyone will probably watch it to pair the guys. I do read BL mangas but sometimes it feel like the pairing is destroying the real good element of the anime. It feels not right. But I’m also a fan of sports anime, okay? Eyeshield 21 is my favorite sports anime. I understand that Days is not your cup of tea since I’m aware that its lacking in sports aspects. Though I enjoyed the main characters friendship so that’s what keep me from watching it. LOL I think I probably the same. Most of them are really rude and doesn’t try to understand the story. Its kinda annoying to see fans like that ugh. Ah Shokugeki no Souma? But in my case, I only watch it for my Akira-sama lol. I’m not really a fan of that series because of the character designs. It has a lot of ecchi fanservice that’s why I’m having a hard time to like it.

    • oooh i had no idea Tsukiuta was announced that far back… (hopefully that doesn’t happen with Yuri on ice (the one about figure skating) because the PV was super good). The only thing that put me off for Arslan Senki was the character design, because I’m not a big fan of Arakawa Hiromu’s art style (I know, it’s so shallow of me, but whatever…) The story does sound pretty good though.

Also I loved Joker Game last season! My favorite was Flying Witch, but Joker Game was definitely the best serious anime. Seinen anime tends to be kind of hit or miss for me tbh, because I always lean towards more light-hearted stuff. Serious is good once in a while though. Death Parade was also really good a few seasons back, and both Ajin and Erased two seasons ago were spectacular.

Not sure about Cheer Danshi shipping tbh. I’m glad that the anime itself isn’t pushing ships (not like Free! at least, though I’m MakoHaru trash anyways). BUT OMG I LOVE EYESHIELD 21. It’s my favorite too, though I definitely prefer the manga over the anime. I feel like Eyeshield 21 is definitely heads above pretty much every other sports anime or manga I’ve ever come across. It’s just so good??? I don’t even understand but it’s so good TT TT

Shokugeki no Souma is good for one thing only, and that’s the food LOL I watch for my goddess Megumi and my smol child Takumi haha they’re precious and should be protected at all costs.

In Tsukiuta’s case, they just confirmed the anime adaption and after that, the next announcement about the anime just happened this year lol. I see. But if you don’t like the chara design, you should try the old arslan senki ova? It has different chara designs. Some says that its better than the latest one? Sample of the old one: http://when-will.net/images/artikel/2015/april/Heroic.Legend.Of.Arslan.jpg Tho the new one will cover more events from the novel. In my case, its fine as long as I don’t see any fanservice on it. Looks like I’m into character design that’s not into fan service? Oh! Even Utapri’s original chara design is not fanservice! Now I remember why I become a fan of that series lol. These are the sample art by the Utapri’s original illustrator. That illustrator is not really the type that draw googly and sparkly eyes. Her art is pretty flexible to all genre. She draw for Mecha anime, RPG game, Mystery Visual Novel, Light Novel, BL game and Otome game. A-1 pictures (aka B project and Utapri anime studio) just destroy it lol. But I actually get used to the anime art style but I you make me choose I obviously prefer the original one.

You also watch it??!! OMG! I’m glad someone appreciate it! I really like that series. If only they finish the story cuz it only has 4 novel OTL For me, it comes second as seinen anime. Monster is still the number 1 for me. That’s because the anime literally put ALL what happened from the manga. If you’re not familiar with it, its basically a story about a surgeon who saves a child’s life but it turns out that child is now a psycho killer. Feeling responsible of what he did, the surgeon try to stop that killer. The anime is full of adults if you don’t mind and take place in the germany. Its a good Psychological Thriller I tell you. Monster Opening theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msTB5r8nUHU As for Erased and Ajin, I try to watch those but dropped it for some reason. I only watch Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu during that season if I remember right?

Try searching it in tumblr xDD And you can see what I’m talking about. About viewers shipping the characters lol. REALLY?!! I’m the same!!! The protagonist’s character development is JUST SO BEAUTIFUL! I only watch the anime for the beautiful opening songs, voice actors and to see them animated lol. I just love how their every match is SO UNPREDICTABLE! Unlike other sports anime, that I can guess the pattern so quickly.

LOL. Yeah I agree the food looks good. But I just can’t really handle the fanservice whenever someone taste the food. It just feels not right. I much prefer Yakitate Japan and Hell’s Kitchen. Uhh I’m not really familiar with the characters since I only watch it for my curry bishie lol <33 Please don't mind me xDD I'm just weak on long-haired bishies. That's the kind of fanservice I like. Not the ecchi stuffs.

      • i have heard about monster (a friend recommended it to me a long time ago because i liked Hellsing a lot and monster is done by the same studio). I generally stay away from more serious shows in the summer though, which is why i’m more enjoying shows like cheer danshi instead of 91 days, haha. I really loved Ajin, but what drew me to it so much was actually the opening and ending songs, which were both really really really good. I’ve heard good things about Showa Genroku though.

The character development in ES21 is the best i’ve seen in sports manga i think. Not only are the main characters so good, but the other ones are awesome too. I especially like sakuraba’s development- that one scene where he’s yelling at shin in the rain like “what am i supposed to do when i’m not talented” is my absolute favorite. So beautiful. And yeah, the action was so great; murata yusuke is one of my favorite artists.
Yakitate Japan was really great lol. My favorite cooking manga.

  6. I actually watched 10 episodes of B-Pro
not because i found the plot or the heroine so compelling but because i gave it another episode when i was ready to give it up at the second one and it became increasingly clear that the heroine is absolutely obsolete because these guys are all completely gay for each other.
…and i’m not someone who sees gay moments where there aren’t any or it’s just kinda ambiguous…so the really where 100% gay for each other.

Which as flat as the rest of the plot and the character development fell was kind of a nice and refreshing twist to this kind of story since it was neither the almost softcore porn-/plotheavy porn-esque kind of m/m romance anime and manga usually favours nor the ‘tragedy and bad endings galore’ version that mainstream shows and hollywood usually deliver.
